Bread and Roses

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the struggle between organized labor and the cartel of owners was reaching murderous proportions. Union members were stockpiling dynamite to assassinate "the bosses" and the owners were bringing in the militia and the infamous Pinkerton guards with orders to shoot to kill. The period witnessed bloody wars like the Chicago Haymarket Massacre (May 4, 1886) and the Matewan strike in West Virginia (1921) that lasted months with heavy casualties on both sides. The country was as close to civil war as it had been since 1864.But I want to talk about a different strike.
